Value in Competition

In 1862 the US decided to build the intercontinental railroad. The project was set up as a competition between the Central Pacific Rail Co. which began laying track in Sacramento and headed east and the Union Pacific which began at the Missouri river and headed west. The company that reached a location in Utah first, won the competition. The project and the competition created a lot of excitement and interest by the general public. President Biden is proposing a three trillion dollar infrastructure project and I like the idea of competition. We select projects of similar size and scope. One project in New York utilizing union labor the other in Florida using non-union labor. The projects would be followed by a camera crew so that the general public could witness the interaction between government and private sector. This transparency would motivate all players to act as creatively and efficiently as possible, and make for some good television.
